Health Testing

At Arctic Edge Samoyeds, every breeding decision is made with long-term health, temperament, and breed preservation as our guiding priorities. Prior to this breeding, both sire and dam completed a comprehensive suite of genetic and orthopedic screenings through Embark for Breeders, OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals), and Paw Print Genetics. These tests evaluate inherited conditions known within the Samoyed breed and ensure that each puppy has the healthiest possible foundation.

Embark for Breeders
Comprehensive DNA Analysis

Embark provides one of the most extensive canine DNA panels available, screening for over 250+ genetic health conditions as well as traits and genetic diversity.

We use Embark to:

  • Confirm parentage and genetic relationships

  • Screen for recessive diseases common in Northern and Spitz breeds

  • Identify any genetic carriers or risks prior to breeding

  • Validate COI (Coefficient of Inbreeding) to support healthy, diverse matings

Embark’s full-spectrum approach ensures that each parent is genetically compatible and free of preventable hereditary conditions.

Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA)
Structural & Organ Health Screening

Reference: https://ofa.org/

OFA health certifications are the gold standard used by responsible breeders for evaluating inherited structural and organ-related conditions. Our testing includes, when age-appropriate:

  • Hips and Elbows (radiographic evaluation for dysplasia)

  • Eye Examination (CAER) performed by board-certified veterinary ophthalmologists

  • Cardiac Evaluation ensuring normal heart function

  • Dentition and other breed-recommended screenings

OFA provides impartial, board-certified evaluation to help reduce the risk of orthopedic or systemic conditions passing to future generations.

Paw Print Genetics
Targeted Breed-Specific DNA Testing

Reference: https://www.pawprintgenetics.com/

Paw Print Genetics offers precision genetic testing panels with verification procedures that include two independent scientists reviewing every test result. They are widely used in performance, working, and show-breeding programs.

We use Paw Print Genetics to:

  • Confirm any breed-specific genetic conditions

  • Obtain double-verification of disorders that could affect Samoyeds specifically

  • Provide cross-laboratory validation alongside Embark results

The combined use of Paw Print Genetics and Embark ensures that all genetic findings are accurate, comprehensive, and thoroughly verified.

Why We Use All Three Agencies

Each organization covers different aspects of canine health:

  • Embark – broad genetic screening + diversity + parentage

  • Paw Print Genetics – fine-tuned, breed-specific panel + double verification

  • OFA – physical/structural certifications that DNA alone cannot assess

Using all three provides a multi-layered health profile that exceeds the minimum standards required by the Samoyed Club of America and AKC-recommended breeding guidelines.

This thorough approach ensures every puppy from this litter begins life with a strong, well-documented health foundation, both genetically and structurally.

Future Testing Enhancements: Orivet

Beginning with future litters, we will also incorporate Orivet Genetic Pet Care into our testing program.

Orivet offers customizable DNA panels and detailed breed-specific disease insights, along with advanced carrier-risk assessment tools. Adding Orivet will further strengthen our ability to validate results across multiple laboratories and maintain the highest standards of health, diversity, and genetic stewardship for our breeding program.
